The term air conditioning is defined as the temperature control, humidity control and cleanliness of air. Most of the installed units in domestic and commercial applications are comfort cooling heat pump systems.
All of the systems described below can be either cooling only or used as heat pump units using the refrigeration cycle in reverse. In many instances this can be the most efficient form of heating.
Air conditioning systems can usually be broken into several categories:
In which refrigeration equipment delivers cooling through air handling unit(s) and/or pumped water circuits. These may include constant volume (CV) systems, variable air volume (VAV) systems, systems using fan coil units (FCUs) or induction units, and systems using active or passive chilled beams
In which a single outdoor unit containing refrigeration and heat rejection equipment is connected to an individual indoor unit delivering cooling
In which 1 or more outdoor units’ containing refrigeration and heat rejection equipment are connected to a number of indoor units delivering cooling. These may be called multi-split package systems and include variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems
In which a series of individual reversible heat pumps in the treated spaces are linked by a common water circuit to a central boiler and refrigeration heat rejection plant. Such systems may commonly be called 'Versatemp systems' (Distributed Heat Pump Systems) following the original trade name of the patent holder, but there are other systems that operate using the same principle
